Full-time Forensic Pathologist
(Anatomical Pathologist may be considered)

As the lead medicolegal investigative office for reportable deaths the province, the Office of the
Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) is located in Newfoundland and Labrador’s capital city of St. John’s
and serves a population of more than 500,000 residents. The OCME operates under of the
Department of Justice and Public Safety, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The OCME is currently seeking the services of a full-time Forensic Pathologist.

Candidates must be eligible for licensure in Newfoundland and Labrador and have obtained or be
eligible to obtain Forensic Pathology certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons
of Canada and/or the American Board of Forensic Pathology. If candidate is Board certified in
Anatomical Pathology, then experience in Forensic Pathology is desirable.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

1. Perform medico legal autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death
2. Complete medico-legal investigations for reportable deaths in Newfoundland and Labrador, in accordance with the Fatalities Investigations Act
3. Provide on-call services as required
4. Perform clinical autopsies as required
5. May be required to testify in court
6. Provide the law enforcement agencies with opinion in non-fatal trauma cases
7. Participate in teaching of Anatomical Pathology residents at Memorial University of Newfoundland
8. Other duties as assigned by the Chief Medical Examiner

Compensation is in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding of the Newfoundland and
Labrador Medical Association (NLMA).

The duties and responsibilities of the Office are governed by the Fatalities Investigations Act and is critical to the administration of justice in the province.
