Dr. Iakovina Alexopoulou
Dr. Vina Alexopoulou is a professor of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at McMaster University and Director of Anatomical Pathology in the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program.
She obtained her M.D. at the University of Athens, Greece and completed her postgraduate training at McMaster University.
She became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1980 with a Specialty Certificate in Anatomical Pathology. She studied Renal Pathology at the University of Chicago, under Dr. B. Spargo.
Dr. Alexopoulou has a strong background in Undergraduate and Post-graduate Medical Education. She has served as a member of the Royal College Board of Examiners in Anatomical Pathology between 1997 and 2001, the Board of Examiners for General Surgery between 2002 and 2006, and as a Nucleus member for the Royal College Specialty Committee in Anatomical Pathology until 2010. She is the National Specialty Society observer on the Royal College Anatomical Pathology Specialty Committee. She is currently the course director of the CAP sponsored Annual Residents’ Review Course, together with Dr. Butany, as the co-director.
Dr. Alexopoulou is a practicing surgical pathologist with special interest in Renal Pathology since 1980 and has published several papers in Renal Pathology, including transplantation. A well-known Renal Pathologist throughout Canada has been working as a consultant for several nephrology units and conducts educational workshops for pathologists and nephrologists locally, nationally and around the world.
