Head, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

The Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for the position of Head, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong background in academic leadership as well as have experience in sustaining and strengthening collaborations with other academic units. The successful applicant is also expected to establish strong clinical and administrative linkages with all six Health Authorities at provincial, regional and community levels across British Columbia. This appointment is for a five (5) year term, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory review. It is expected that the successful candidate will qualify for and be offered a full-time UBC appointment at the rank of Professor with tenure, with the possibility to practice in a local hospital, if desired.

The Faculty of Medicine, together with its partners including B.C.’s Health Authorities, provides innovative programs in the areas of health and life sciences through a province-wide delivery model. The Faculty teaches students at the undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate, resident and fellowship levels and generates more than $350 million in research funding each year. The Department Head will provide leadership by creating and advancing a provincial departmental mission, strategic plan and goals that align with the Faculty and the University. They will promote the Faculty’s principles of excellence, engagement, equity and effectiveness and will facilitate collaboration across the Faculty and University.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC is an academically intensive Department within the UBC Faculty of Medicine whose activities span a broad spectrum of teaching, research, and academic service, often performed in the milieu of clinical practice, and are ultimately devoted to improving the care, treatment, and well-being of patients. The Department offers academic degrees at the bachelor’s (Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLSc)) and graduate (MSc, PhD) levels. The graduate program, which is one of the largest in the Faculty of Medicine, has been recognized by UBC for its quality. The Department plays a major role in the MD undergraduate program and offers an accredited residency-training program. Faculty members participate across a spectrum of research from investigative to translational to clinical applied research and are recognized locally, nationally and internationally for their excellence. The Department attracts strong research support for approximately 40 full-time faculty members, 230 clinical faculty members, 40 postdoctoral research fellows, over 70 graduate students, and numerous undergraduate students, research associates, and visiting scientists and clinicians.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in working with health sector partners in a variety of areas including academic integration of teaching and research into clinical service delivery and Health Human Resource Planning, particularly in areas of academic expertise. The successful applicant will show evidence of building, managing and maintaining high-quality and productive relationships across cultural differences, and having the ability to communicate and interact with empathy, understanding, and respect of diverse and divergent perspectives and behaviours.

The successful candidate will be a proven leader with administrative experience working in a dynamic and complex healthcare environment. Appropriate knowledge and clinical experience in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine will be an asset. The individual will have demonstrated success in supporting career development of faculty members, demonstrated excellence in teaching and commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, and a proven record of scholarly excellence at an international level. The successful candidate should hold a PhD and/or MD degree with eligibility for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
